The young working couples of today seem to have it all — the abundance and the luxuries, the attitude, and whatever they desire. However, all of this comes at a certain cost — stress and having no time for each other.

The millennials these days lead hectic lifestyles as they work in different shifts, travel a lot for work, and are always on-the-move. This gives rise to various challenges – be it keeping your relationship alive with your partner, maintaining a work-life balance, taking care of your health, and even planning a baby. You might think: It’s anyways hard for the egg and sperm to meet but imagine, how tougher it would be when both you and your partner are mostly busy with your work and are often travelling. So, how can you conceive or get pregnant if both you and your partner travel a lot for work and hardly stay with each other?

But don’t get disheartened. The good news is that there are ways to handle this too. With just some planning, you could time your meeting with your partner to coincide with your window of opportunity – yes, your fertile period. The best time to conceive or get pregnant is about three to five days before ovulation. Because the sperm can survive for several days inside a woman’s uterus, they’ll be ready and anticipating the egg when it comes.

To figure out your ovulation date, you must first start tracking your periods. In simple words, ovulation means when the egg is released from your ovary, which usually occurs about midway through your menstrual cycle, and Day 1 of the cycle is actually the first day of your period. Generally, women have a 28-day cycle (but it could vary from 23 to 35 days). So, it’s advisable to try and plan to be home or maybe visit your partner or vice versa during your fertile window. Or, if either of you could change your travel plans to fit in some leisure time when you have your fertile window too, then it would be perfect.

If you want to be further sure of your day of ovulation, you can check your temperature every morning. Just a few days before that midway mark, you should start checking your basal body temperature (BBT) using a thermometer. Just after the ovulation starts, your temperature rises about a degree, though you will not notice or feel it. Keep a note of the day your temperature rises; and about three to five days before this is when you would be most fertile. So, for the next cycle, you can plan for a romantic vacation or rendezvous on that particular day or time the month, even if it’s a quick getaway.

It’s also worth flying down in to meet your partner, even if just for a night. Sounds like a lot to organize and manage? But believe it; the results could be what you’ve been hoping for.

However, life isn’t that easy. You might be working a usual nine to six weekday grind, but your partner might be working in a graveyard shift during the week and might be busy or travelling most weekends too. This surely can wreak havoc on your relationship and on your dreams of getting pregnant. But in every relationship, some amount of compromises are important, and especially when you want to plan a family, all your effort makes it worth it.

Obviously, the best thing which can be done is to try to work schedule that gives you both some time together. Remember, you can make it work if you have the right attitude and are ready for a few adjustments. So, here are some things that you could do:

Optimal utilization of the time you have together

There would be at least a few hours every week where neither of you would be sleeping and would be together. Ask yourself – Do you spend this time lazing on a couch in front of a TV screen, doing different chores, or in running errands? Stop doing that. First, make the most of whatever time you have together. Rewind and think of the time when you met. You wouldn’t waste such precious time with your lover by just lazing around or picking up groceries; would you?

Vacation together

Even if both of you keep travelling or have different work timings, every cloud has a silver lining. There’s a big chance that you both would get some holidays or vacation time each year together. So, what are you waiting for? Plan a vacation in that period and cherish that rare occasion together. Not only to get pregnant, who doesn’t like taking a break to recharge themselves and also their relationship?

Little things always matter

Even if you don’t see your partner mostly in a month or during a day, do little things that can make him or her feel special. You could write some cheesy romantic notes and stick it in their lunchbox, send naughty messages so that they are excited to meet you over the weekend, or help in some chore so that you both get some time together. These little things might seem small, but this is what adds up and nurtures your relationship.

So most importantly, remember that you can make it work, if you are determined to plan a baby and have a lovely family of your own.


Time is of utmost importance if you’re considering undergoing fertility treatments. Women who have been trying to conceive for over six months to a year should not delay their fertility treatments, because the chances of conceiving may plunge even more as time passes.

But why would a couple delay such treatments if they eventually want a baby? Maybe they don’t want to step out of their comfort zone, there’s a fear of the unknown, a thought of financial pressure, fear of failure, etc. Patients also delay going to a fertility expert and seeking treatment for infertility issues as they are unclear of what options are available or they are going on living in a hope that they would get pregnant on their own or naturally. Believe it or not, the first step in the infertility journey is to acknowledge or accept your infertility! Don’t let fear sway your decisions and keep you from conceiving and growing your family. Now, is the right time – this time will not come back.

Here’s why you should not delay your infertility treatment:

Age affects both female and male fertility: Infertility is your inability to get pregnant after a year of trying, but in the case of women over 35 years of age, if they are not able to conceive after six months of trying, then it’s infertility. As age advances, both the quality and quantity of a woman’s eggs diminish. So, if you are in your mid-30’s, you should consult a doctor as soon as possible. Timely treatment can enhance your chances of a healthy pregnancy and then delivering a baby successfully.

Studies have proven that the quality and the count of the sperm also start to go down as a man’s age advances. An older man may also have a higher chance of DNA damage in his sperm. These abnormalities may lead to the birth of a child who might have congenital disabilities or psychiatric conditions and might also amplify the risk of miscarriage during pregnancy.

Preserve your fertility at a younger age: Women are born with their total amount of eggs and they cannot create more eggs throughout their life; this is termed as the ovarian reserve. If you choose to go with infertility treatment like In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) or maybe elective egg freezing, then eggs and embryos are preserved at the age of treatment and you may decide to delay your pregnancy. These eggs and embryos that are frozen can be used at a later time so that you can conceive successfully.

Some of these tests would be timed with your monthly cycle (for example, the blood test that is drawn on the third day of the menstrual cycle for testing the levels of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), estradiol (E2), and luteinizing hormone (LH)). Your partner might also undergo a semen analysis and you might have to get some additional tests done depending on your specific health history.


Infertility treatment requires some time and patience: Infertility treatment takes some time, but it is definitely worth it when you get a positive outcome. It can be tough to get pregnant when you are suffering from infertility. Some couples also find it tough in conceiving the second time or when they are trying for their second child, which is called secondary infertility. So, if you consult a doctor and start your fertility treatment on time, then you will get closer to your dream of parenthood and there will be lesser chances of complications.

Infertility treatment may not be quick, but it is completely worth it

In Vitro Fertilization or IVF is a miraculous blessing for many women who have been suffering from infertility. But as IVF doesn’t guarantee a 100% success rate, if you aren’t successful on your first IVF cycle, it’s not the end of the world.

When a couple decides to undergo an IVF treatment, they are usually very hopeful of being successful in the first attempt itself. However, the success of the treatment depends on a lot of factors and therefore, it could take more than one cycle of IVF to conceive successfully.

How many cycles of IVF should you undergo?

IVF does take some emotional, physical, and financial toll. Thus, a couple getting this treatment should have a mindset that they might need to undergo more than one IVF cycle. As per statistics, a woman in her 30s, using her own eggs in an IVF treatment is likely to have more than 70% chance of getting pregnant within three completed attempts – if she has sufficient ovarian reserve (which means the ability to produce multiple follicles or eggs in response to gonadotropin stimulation), has a male partner who is fertile (or goof quality sperm from a sperm donor) with access to motile sperm, and has a healthy and receptive uterus which can develop a satisfactory uterine lining. However, women who are 40, but meet the same criteria, will have only half that chance (say about 35%- 40%).

Unfortunately, there are always some cases, who despite the best effort in an IVF treatment do not succeed to conceive easily. So, if your fertility expert uncovers the reason for repeated IVF failure in a woman, then it is justified to continue trying more IVF cycles with a well-defined and new approach that can address the cause for prior failures.

However, if conventional IVF has failed to bring in a successful result, then other options are recommended like ovum donation or IVF surrogacyshould be considered.

So, if you choose to undergo IVF, you must view the entire treatment procedure with an optimistic mind and be emotionally prepared to cope up with the possibility of failure. If your first couple of IVF cycles fail, you must consider talking to some support group or other patients going through the infertility journey to stay motivated and understand how it could take time but you still have chances to succeed. You should also consult your fertility expert and understand what could be the medical reasons of IVF cycle failure in your case and what should be the course of action.

So, it is very essential for IVF patients to realize right from the onset that an inability to have a child or conceive successfully is never a reflection of them as an individual. Having said that, do remember that there is no upper limit to how many IVF cycles should be taken, but persistently trying is the golden rule of success in an IVF treatment.


When you are undergoing fertility treatments – specifically IVF – the two-week wait after the embryo transfer and till the first pregnancy test is the most nerve wracking. It really seems like the longest, most stressful two weeks of one’s life. Women undergoing IVF treatment say that they feel helpless because they have no control over the situation.

But as someone has rightly said, “If you can imagine it, you can achieve it. If you can dream it, you can become it.”

So, it’s important to stay positive and upbeat. The first step is to acknowledge that anyone would feel anxious and that is normal. But it’s also important to understand that by stressing over the result endlessly, you create so much internal conflict. At such a time, you need to be kinder to yourselves.

Some Coping Strategies and Tips

It’s obvious that when one has to wait to hear the “news”, can be very exhausting and is like being on a rollercoaster of fear and hope. So here are some coping strategies or survival tips that will be helpful to you during the two-week wait:

  • Limit the number of people you share everything with: Yes, it’s better to have just a close circle of people with whom you share about your cycle and tell them that you will share the outcome too. Some couples go around telling their relatives and friends thinking no news is bad news. But that actually adds to the stress when so many people start enquiring about the result and add to your stress.
  • Keep yourself occupied: The two-week wait is difficult as time just seems to drag, and it can be very tough not to obsess over what will happen. But by keeping your mind busy, you can stay distracted from the situation. Take your pick – do some creative pursuits like art or crafts, painting, knitting, photography, singing, or cooking. Just make sure that you are busy with these activities, which can also prove to be quite relaxing.
  • Organize and declutter: Use this time to organize your home as if you’ve never organized before. Clean and de-clutter your drawers, closets, your book shelfs, and distract yourself as much as possible. Involve your partner in organizing and re-decorating your home and enjoy the fresh look and stress-free living space that you get out of your efforts.
  • Plan a TV marathon: If you never got time to watch all those Netflix series that your friends keep talking about, then this is the time. Catch up all the TV shows you have been meaning to watch. Plan a movie marathon with your partner and enjoy the time together. Not only will that take your mind off your situation but will also help you and your partner to bond. So just curl up on that cozy sofa together and forget about your worries or outcome after the two-week wait.
  • Limit your Google time: Stay away from the temptation of going to Google for every single pregnancy symptom you feel during the two-week wait. You might feel light cramping similar to period cramps maybe till beta pregnancy test; but remember – every person has different symptoms. Also, as early pregnancy symptoms could be quite similar to PMS symptoms, Googling wouldn’t help as much and may confuse or frustrate you even more. So, refrain from doing that altogether.
  • Set aside time for your partner: You should decide some time when you can talk to your partner about how you feel. Discuss with your partner what all could be done if the news is not positive. Make plans to handle the situation – will you like to go out to eat or maybe for a movie to distract yourself or would you prefer being left alone? Discuss about the next steps of treatment or options available. Remember that your partner can’t read your mind; so, it’s important to talk.
  • Practice mindfulness and meditate: When you’re going through this tough phase of the two-week long wait, it’s hard to focus on the present moment, as you are only thinking about the future and if you will conceive or not. Mindfulness enables us to shift our thoughts from any past events or thinking about future and rather focus on the present moment. It takes time to master it, but deep breathing and calming yourself mentally will help you do it. This way, you will be able to change the negative thoughts and can turn your thinking pattern into something positive.
  • Enjoy life: Lastly and most importantly, try to enjoy life as much as possible. Remember, this time won’t come back. Try to be happy about moment you are in. Be positive and optimistic and stay relaxed. Keep affirming to yourself that, whatever will happen, you will still be okay.

So never ever lose hope. Tomorrow could be that day you have been waiting for!
